Just for fun: taking the step from real
to cartoon noses

Just like you did in the section on ears, it's time to have a little fun! In the previous sections on the nose you learned about a lot of detail. Now, it's time to abstract a little and go a little wacko. And that's exactly what cartoon feature's are: wacky abstractions. What cartoons have in common with caricatures is exaggeration - they keep you from getting too hung up on detail and they're just plain fun to fool around with. It's easy to get critical of yourself when you're doing anything "artsy" - we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. So just have fun with these and get as outrageous as you can.

Below are a small group of cartoon noses in side and front views and lastly with glasses. They're hardly the full range of cartoon noses - in fact they're about 1 gazillionth of 1 percent of the varieties of noses you can conjure up. Use these to springboard off.

There are two other things you'll be doing here without even thinking about it:

  • 1) you'll be looking at the nose and it's different parts - and in different views,
  • 2) and you'll be capturing a likeness of the nose with a minimal amount of lines

Your assignment:

1) Pick 3 or 4 noses from each view and draw 8 to ten quick sketches of each. Remember to draw them in both left and right views (mirror image). For that. you may want to review the section on Vase/face views of the nose on the master link page. Suggestion: pull out your viewfinder (Lesson 7) to help isolate each nose.

2) When you're done with that, your assignment will be to draw a big old round face and put on both cartoon noses and your nose, that is, a nose you see from a favorite picture of yourself. Don't worry about drawing accurate eyes or ears or teeth or anything else. Just have fun with this.

Draw your noses onto a great big circle face or stick drawing like this, (and waste no time trying to do them well, in fact, try to draw them bad! yes, bad and sloppy, and not trying to make them look like anybody's nose in the real world - except for your own nose):

Have fun with these - draw fast and sloppy!

The only thing I want you to worry about is putting a nose on a head with or without a body, without worrying about having to do anything right! Go for it. Do this for 15- 20 minutes. There is no way to do this wrong.

Here's some different views of the nose, cartoon style:
